Wombat State Forest was hit hard by storms in late 2021. Platypus has been undertaking a range of remedial works, including the clearing of fallen trees from tracks to ensure safe access.
Our teams have since been able to undertake targeted weed management using previously collected data. Priority weed species include blackberry and exotic trees, and revegetation of indigenous plants will follow.

The Edithvale Wetlands is a Ramsar Convention list The Edithvale Wetlands is a Ramsar Convention listed site (Wetlands of International Importance) on Boon Wurrung Country, where we have been controlling Common Reed (𝘗𝘩𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴).
Common Reed provides important habitat and breeding sites for the threatened Australasian Bittern (𝘉𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘴) and 38 migratory birds including Latham's Snipe (𝘎𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘸𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘪). However, the reeds can become overly dense, forming a monoculture and leaving it impenetrable for wildlife.
By grooming patches of the Common Reed with our Volvo excavators and expert operators, we have been enhancing the habitat values for these significant species and ensuring continued migration to and from the wetlands.

Utilising drill and fill, stem injection and ringbarking methods, we've controlled large Willows and Hawthorn trees through parts of the Coliban Catchment on Dja Dja Wurrung country.
As the dead trees break down, their roots will help keep the banks intact and make way for indigenous plantings and regeneration. Weed removal, revegetation and ongoing management will allow the system to recover, providing cleaner water, habitat and an overall healthier ecosystem.
The Platypus team have begun restoration works to The Platypus team have begun restoration works to establish significant habitat values of a section of Five Mile Creek on Wurundjeri Country in Naarm/Melbourne's west.
Initially our arborist and chainsaw crew removed stands of invasive Willow and Pine trees to be replaced by Indigenoues trees.
In preparation for planting 14,000 indigenous plants, 3500m² of jute mat has been laid acting as both bank erosion control and weed suppressant. Planting begins next week and we’re looking forward to seeing the improvements over time!

Healthy rivers means healthy life. The humble Tara Healthy rivers means healthy life. The humble Tarago River in the Kulin Nations' east is a vital river system supporting Western Port and the Mornington Peninsula.
It also supports the endangered Australian Grayling, Platypus and Shortfinned Eel.
An 870m stretch of the Tarago consisted of 95% coverage of Willows (Salix fragilis), almost no mid-story or groundcover and a limited scattered canopy.
Enter team Platypus! As part of stage one, we eradicated most of the willows, grinding them and reusing as mulch spread back along the river. Large amounts of blackberry and yellow flag have also been controlled.
With stage two of indigenous plantings to come, we aim to improve vegetation condition from low to medium, enhancing fish passage and the general health of the waterway.

Our professional arborist, civil and NRM teams hav Our professional arborist, civil and NRM teams have been busy on this major weed removal project the last few months!
High-threat invasive species including Willows, Pines, Hawthorn, Glyceria and Blackberry are being eradicated and controlled along a 1.3km stretch of water in regional Victoria.
Many large weedy trees have been felled by our arborists and logs transported off site. Pine logs will be repurposed for domestic and commercial use whilst unsalvageable logs mulched with our chipper and grinder or placed out for habitat and erosion control. Fencing will also be installed to keep the grass-grazing dairy cattle out of the watercourse for it's ongoing protection.

Another week and another new project is underway Another week and another new project is underway along our waterways! This is a revegetation project in Eltham on Wurundjeri-Willlam land is a popular place for locals and visitors to enjoy nature and fresh air.
We're currently preparing areas along Diamond Creek for revegetation in the coming cooler months.
The 5,485 indigenous plants going in will help reduce erosion along the banks and provide cover and habitat for the resident platypus. Mid story and canopy vegetation will make for more habitat and biodiversity into the future. What a ripper place to work!

😍 An appreciation post for the gorgeous indigen 😍 An appreciation post for the gorgeous indigenous plants we regularly see on our work sites across the Kulin Nations.
Whilst realising the impacts of climate change we are facing, protecting these remnant and revegetated natives is important for the continuation of natural ecosystems and the habitat they support which in turn support us.

This week we've been locating, mapping and exposin This week we've been locating, mapping and exposing European Rabbit (𝘖𝘳𝘺𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘶𝘴) warrens along Anderson's Creek on Wurundjeri Country. Our experienced team also provides professional reports and recommendations on how to effectively control pest species including rabbits and foxes.
Introduced pest animal species cause environmental damage by way of competition for food and habitat, environmental destruction and predation. That's why we work hard in assisting with the control of these animals.

One of our ongoing projects in conjunction with @m One of our ongoing projects in conjunction with @melbournewater is the control of 𝘎𝘭𝘺𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘹𝘪𝘮𝘢 (Reed Sweet Grass). In various locations across Wurundjeri Country we have reduced the weed cover from up to 50% to just 0-5%, through integrated control methods.
With extensive root systems 𝘎𝘭𝘺𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 can easily become the dominant species, outcompeting indigenous plants in swamps, wetlands and boggy areas.
If left untreated, a monoculture of 𝘎𝘭𝘺𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 negatively impacts water flow and quality. It also reduces the availability of appropriate food and nesting for water birds including indicator species.
Since 2016, our dedicated crews have been trudging through swamps to treat the weed effectively while minimising environmental impacts- go team Platypus!

To improve diversity and river health we've done s To improve diversity and river health we've done some aquatic planting and weed control through parts of Plenty Gorge in Naarm's (Melbourne) north.
Highly invasive Vinca, blackberry and prickly pear have been well controlled to make way for indigenous plantings.
We've recently planted a bunch of Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani (Bullrush), complementing the various trees, shrubs and grasses we planted in Guling season (August) last year.
Two geological types collide in Plenty Gorge, with basalt on the west and sedentary rock on the east from ancient volcanic activity. With many walking tracks, amazing views, plants and wildlife, be sure to visit!

The funky-bellied Southern Toadlet (Pseudophryne s The funky-bellied Southern Toadlet (Pseudophryne semimarmorata) is a threatened species in Victoria, so we're working with @melbournewater to protect it's habitat.
In one of Melbourne/Narrm's reservoirs, we have been hard at it controlling inhabitable invasive species such as Blackberry and Tutsan along tributaries to improve their chances of survival.
Fun fact! Australia does not have native true toads. Toadlets are named as such as they resemble toads from abroad in their warty appearance. Southern Toadlets also has a tendency to walk instead of hop!

Is an echidna a good omen for 2022? We think so! W Is an echidna a good omen for 2022? We think so! We're lucky to often spot wildlife in their natural habitat when working. One of our crews was treating invasive Vinca major (Blue Periwinkle) at Plenty Gorge when they came across this echidna. We love spotting them and reminds us why we work so hard to maintain and improve our natural areas (while always ensuring the safety and well-being of wildlife and crew of course)!
