Why remove woody weeds and willows?

Woody weeds, such as gorse, blackberry, boxthorn and briar rose, have a detrimental effect on the environment as they tend to create a habitat more suited to exotic pest animals and do not provide a good natural environment for native animals and plants.

Willows, which were introduced mostly in the 1950s to 1970s as an erosion control measure, have since proved to have a negative impact on waterway health, and in 1999 were classified as one of Australia’s Weeds of National Significance.
