Our History

Founded in 2008 by Matt Jackson, Platypus Environmental Services started with only five employees, a station wagon and a spray rig. Over the years, Platypus has earned an outstanding reputation in the industry for expertise, attention to detail, competitive prices and on-time completion of projects.

Today Platypus has depots based throughout Victoria, and offers a variety of environmental services performed by a qualified and highly-trained workforce.

Our committed team of environmental experts is our main asset, with members holding a range of Agricultural, Environmental Science and Natural Resource Management degrees and tertiary qualifications. Our employees also receive specialist training and are sent on courses to gain the relevant permits and licenses to ensure only the highest quality of service is delivered.

Which area do you specialise in, and which qualifications do you have?
I have spent the last 15 years focusing on River Health and Catchment Management. My formal qualifications are a Bachelor in Environmental Science and a Graduate Certificate in River Health.

Which three words would you use to describe Platypus?
Passionate, hardworking and reliable.

What part of your job do you most enjoy?
Working on the tools with the crew. I don’t get to do it much these days but I have a great team and it is a lot of fun.

Which piece of equipment do you most relate to and why?
The groomer attachment on the excavator. I like grooming for the day and looking back to see what has been achieved.

Which area do you specialise in, and which qualifications do you have?
I hold a bachelor in Environmental Science. In the workplace I specialise in weed management works, revegetation works, managing restoration projects, and conducting vegetation assessments and plant identifications works.

Which three words would you use to describe Platypus?
Committed, passionate, enjoyable

What part of your job do you most enjoy?
Working outdoors in amazing remnant areas of Bushlands and Creeklines, and seeing sites improve throughout projects.

Which area do you specialise in, and which qualifications do you have?
I specialise in weed management and revegetation. I also hold a Bachelor degree in Environmental Science Management.

Which three words would you use to describe Platypus?
Dynamic, rewarding and friendly.

Describe a day working at Platypus?
On a typical day I am based in the Yarra Valley or Gippsland, working on weed control and revegetation maintenance across various sites. My main objective is to ensure native plant survival. When working on a new site we use both spraying and "cut and paint" methods for weed control.

What part of your job do you most enjoy?
Contributing to the restoration and enhancement of our waterways.

Which piece of equipment do you most relate to and why?
Spray Rig - I use it every day and understand its capabilities and limitations.

Which area do you specialise in, and which qualifications do you have?
I specialize in woody weed removal and waterway engineering. I currently hold a Bachelor degree in Agricultural Science.

What three words would you use to describe Platypus?
Precise, innovative, commited.

What part of your job do you most enjoy?
Working outdoors. Experiencing different sites on a frequent basis, seeing some rather scenic landscapes, looking back at your work and seeing the job progress to something better.

Which piece of equipment do you most relate to?
The excavator, it makes light work of otherwise hard manual labour. It is such a versatile tool, such as grooming, (re)moving trees, digging or pile driving, it gets the job done.

Which area do you specialise in, and which qualifications do you have?
I specialise in tree-felling, weed spraying and revegetation. I hold a Diploma in Conservation and Land Management which I was awarded at the North Melbourne Institute of Training and Higher Education.

What three words would you use to describe Platypus?
Fun, friendly and busy.

What part of your job do you most enjoy?
I enjoy felling trees which have a detrimental effect on the environment and then planting native species to replace them.

The chainsaw - it requires skill and precision.
